Big Jump to Begin Mary River Month
Sep 25, 2015
Mary River Month begins this weekend with the Big Jump on World Rivers Day, Sunday 27th September.
Mary River Month is a chance to appreciate the role that our river and creeks play in creating a healthy community and it aims to raise awareness of what we can do as a community to keep the catchment healthy.
“The Big Jump is a very appropriate way to begin Mary River Month as it is a way to celebrate the fact that the Mary River and her tributaries are clean enough to swim in,” explained Ian Mackay, chair of the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee, hosts of Mary River Month.
“Not everyone in the world has this privilege. The Big Jump tradition started in Europe where they have had to work very hard to return rivers to health. The event serves as a reminder that clean water is something to be cherished and protected”.
The whole Mary River catchment community is invited to participate in The Big Jump at 3pm this Sunday afternoon. To participate, head down to your local creek or riverbank at 3pm and take a leap. The leap can be big or small. MRCCC urges you to ensure you put safety first when deciding where to do the Big Jump.
Let us know you’ve participated by sharing a picture of yourself, your friends and family taking a jump into the Mary River or one of her tributaries using #MaryRiverBigJump. Or simply send your photo to MRCCC at email@example.com. The Spring in the Mary photo competition, with $400 in prize money is also accepting entries from the Big Jump. Details at www.mrccc.org.au
Mary River Month is hosted by the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee and is packed full of activities being run by MRCCC and thirteen other organisations throughout the catchment including several Landcare groups, Coastcare, Councils, farmers, traditional owners and water utilities. Most events are free and there is something for everyone. The Mary River Month facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/MRM2015 ) contains details of upcoming events and a calendar is available at www.mrccc.org.au.
