How incredible is this grazing property wetland! T How incredible is this grazing property wetland! This photo was snapped by our project officers who were assessing this property near the Bjelke-Petersen Dam after Cyclone Seth’s deluge. This flooded area is classed as a wetland and is inundated when the dam reaches a high level, which hasn’t happened for about 10 years. The property owners have welcomed nesting swans, a sea eagle, and other water birds enjoying this beautiful wetland while they can.

Through our Grazing Resilience and Sustainable Solutions (GRASS) project they have access to resources and expertise to help improve their property.

The Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resour The Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management (BMRG) recently hosted a morning for the region’s turtle volunteers to show their appreciation for the contribution they make to protect marine turtles. All volunteer groups were invited to attend, and Hon Keith Pitt MP joined the morning tea to express his thank you to the volunteers for the important work they do.

BMRG supports turtle volunteers along Discovery, Woongarra and Fraser coasts and on Lady Musgrave Island through the Saltmarsh and Marine Turtle Monitoring Program, funded through the Federal Government’s Regional Land Partnerships Program. In addition, BMRG offered funding for insurance purposes of the volunteers’ valuable work.

Burnett Mary Regional Group CEO Sheila Charlesworth says it is important for BMRG to be able to show our gratitude to volunteers through events like this.
“Our region supports significant breeding populations of endangered loggerhead turtles and vulnerable green and flatback turtles, and the work done by turtle volunteers each and every year is so valuable.”

BMRG staff held an educational talk for prep to Ye BMRG staff held an educational talk for prep to Year 6 students at Elliott Heads State School on Thursday 6 May 2021. The presentation aimed to raise awareness about #MarineTurtle protection and monitoring projects at Discovery, Woongara and Fraser Coast.

The students were keen to learn about turtle species nesting at the region, what challenges they have been facing when coming offshore to lay their eggs and how volunteers protect the reptile species’ nests and hatchlings.

Use of drones during fox predation work and marine debris pollution were also a component of the presentation. The students showed a keen interest in learning and asked very interesting questions.

The presentation was supported by the #NesttoOcean Program #QueenslandGovernment #DES and #NationalLandcareProgram – Conserving the Outstanding Universal Values of World Heritage Properties: Protecting Saltmarsh and Marine Turtle Monitoring @ausgov.
