The Burnett Mary Community Action Plan project is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, and the Burnett Mary Regional Group.
The Community Action Plan has been developed through consultation with key partners including Traditional Owner and youth representatives, a survey targeted to the Burnett Mary region, a review of existing plans, and three interactive community workshops held in November 2020, February 2021 and April 2021.
The Burnett Mary region has a variety of communities and ecosystems that either directly or indirectly affect the health of the Great Barrier Reef. Through community consultation the aims of the Burnett Mary Community Action Plan were to:
- Create shared goals for community Reef protection, identify specific critical projects and develop a tangible plan that strengthens and accelerates community Reef protection outcomes for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.
- Engage the community on key asset focus areas and BMRG’s existing regional-level plans to create roadmaps that can be used as a guide to inform the community on the processes for change that will reduce asset threats.
- Develop a test, learn, refine approach to establish an ongoing focus for improvement.
The Community Action Plan will form the first collaborative action plan for the Reef in the Burnett Mary Region. As such, it will be maintained as a living document to guide the community in achieving change.
