Community Action Plan:
Enhancing Marine Protection for the Burnett Mary

The local community have always been key in delivering great results to protect the Great Barrier Reef, and this CAP will recognise and boost their efforts, thanks to a partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, and CAP Leaders along the Great Barrier Reef.

The Burnett Mary stretches across 56,000km2 of land and 11,000km2 of sea at the Southern tip of the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef. The region is also home to World Heritage listed K’gari (Fraser Island) and Ramsar listed Great Sandy Strait, offering a habitat to a large variety of flora and fauna.

With such a large range of area and critical native species, this Community Action Plan (CAP) has the specific focus of connecting the community, youth, and Traditional Owner groups to collaborate and present a set of key focus areas to enhance and accelerate positive results for the Great Barrier Reef.

To develop the Burnett Mary CAP, three workshops were held with the community to identify seven key ‘roadmaps’ for positive change for high-importance assets that were also presented by the community. The CAP offers guidance for motivated community members and groups to collaborate and work on a common set of actions better our region and environment for many years to come.
