A great 3 days was had at the Murgon Grazing Clini

A great 3 days was had at the Murgon Grazing Clinic with 45 graziers participating in the workshop, sharing experiences and learning thanks to Resource Consulting Services (RCS). Grazing charts, assessing feed in the paddock and working out how long it will last, building soil health, optimising pasture growth, designing paddocks and water points and boosting animal health were just some of the topics covered.⁠

This workshop was partially funded by BMRG through funding from the Australian Government's #NationalLandcareProgram. ⁠

BMRG Staff, Abbie, Radka, Sam and Simon, recently undertook fieldwork to assist with annual turtle nest counts. The team travelled along the coast of Deepwater National Park looking for evidence of nesting activity using #drone technology. The data collected was given to the local volunteer turtle group, #WreckRockTurtleCare, to include in their annual turtle statistics. Drones are a great way of quickly and efficiently capturing high-quality data in challenging landscapes. #RLP #WorldHeritageSites @ausgov

Today is World Wetlands Day, a day to celebrate wetlands and acknowledge the efforts to conserve this important ecosystem. ⁠
2021 also marks the Ramsar 50th-anniversary celebrations! ⁠

Wetlands provide a range of ecosystem services, from protecting coastal communities from storm surges to being vital requirements for the income of over 1 billion people, not to mention helping support 40% of the world’s species by providing crucial habitat for breeding and feeding. The Burnett Mary Region encompasses many wetland areas within its catchments, though the largest is the Ramsar internationally important Great Sandy Strait Wetland area, located between the western shores of K’gari and the Fraser Coast, covering over 830 square kilometers. This wetland system provides crucial habitat for water mice, dugongs, turtles, fishes, many species of migratory shorebirds and other important species. Find a #Frog in February is a #CitizenScience project to provide information on the distribution of different frog species within the Mary River catchment. ⁠

Frogs are excellent indicators of ecosystem and waterway health as they are incredibly sensitive to all aspects of their environment. This makes data on their distribution and populations not just important to observe the health of these species, but also the overall health of the environment they are found.⁠

The Junior Advisory Group (JAG) is a free #youth membership program within BMRG that will contribute to the development, implementation and promotion of environmental projects and campaigns. Plus have a lot of fun along the way with different events and activities!⁠

BMRG Project Coordinator, Abbie Taylor and Project Officer, Radka Jack recently went to Wreck Rock to work with Wreck Rock Turtle Care. While there they did a #MarineDebris survey and collected all of this in just a few hours! They have since categorised the debris, and disposed of it correctly.

Marine debris can be harmful to marine fauna and ecosystems through ingestion, entanglement and pollution. BMRG conducts and supports surveys as part of our @ausgov funded Protecting Saltmarsh and Marine Turtle Monitoring project.

Marine turtles are a special part of the Burnett M

Marine turtles are a special part of the Burnett Mary region. Mon Repos supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific Ocean.

Each year from November to March, over 400 turtles lay their eggs in the beaches of our region, but only one in 1000 hatchlings survive to adulthood. To help with the conservation and continued survival of these beautiful marine turtles, you can:
• Go Slow for Those Below – when boating, avoid shallow seagrass areas or, if you can’t avoid them, reduce speed to below 10 knots and take extra care.
• Cut the Glow to Help Turtles Go – switch off your unnecessary lights to stop turtles wandering towards the light and to the wrong place.
• Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – avoid single-use plastic and recycle when you can.

Burnett Mary Regional Group is proud to work with highly motivated groups of marine turtle volunteers and organisations such as Gidarjil Development Corporation, SQ Landscapes, Queensland Parks And Wildlife Service and Bundaberg Regional Council, in an effort to remove marine debris, reduce predation by the European red fox, and collect turtle data each season. #nlp
