Our story
The Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) is the peak body for natural resource management (NRM) within the Burnett Mary region. Established in 2001, we are one of 54 national, not-for-profit regional bodies providing an essential link between the community and various programs procured by Government and other funding sources.
BMRG’s vision is “to protect and enhance the agricultural and natural environment of the Burnett Mary region for future generations”. We achieve this by directing investment into a wide range of community-based programs that deliver positive outcomes in the areas of ecological diversity, sustainable land management, water quality, cultural heritage values and coastal and marine management.
Community collaboration and partnerships are paramount to us achieving our vision. We continue to foster strong relationships with a range of organisations including: Local, State and Federal Governments; Landcare and Catchment Care groups; Indigenous organisations; agricultural and industrial sectors; universities and schools.

Our partners
Australian Federal Government
The Australian Government has been a major investor in natural resource management since the mid-1980s, initially through the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT), then through Caring for our Country, leading to today’s Phase Two of the National Landcare Program, referred to as the Regional Land Partnerships Program.
Queensland Government
Queensland is a major investor in making sure the state’s natural land and water resources are sustainably managed under the Natural Resources Investment Program. This includes dedicated funds for Great Barrier Reef catchments.
The funding acknowledges the important role that the natural resource management bodies and the community play in repairing and improving Queensland’s unique assets for future generations.
Local Government
The local governments within the Burnett Mary region play a critical role in maintaining and protecting natural assets on both private and public land within their area. BMRG works collaboratively with local government groups to develop and deliver projects to protect and enhance our region including Bundaberg Regional Council, Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council, Fraser Coast Regional Council, Gladstone Regional Council, Gympie Regional Council, North Burnett Regional Council, South Burnett Regional Council, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Toowoomba Regional Council, Western Downs Regional Council and Wide Bay Burnett Regional Organisation of Councils.
Universities
Universities play a vital role in advancing the scientific knowledge that underpins our work. We collaborate with academic institutions to conduct research, develop innovative solutions, and educate the next generation of environmental leaders. These partnerships enable us to apply cutting-edge science to our projects and enhance our region's sustainability and resilience.

Landcare, coast care & industry
Landcare, coast care, and industry groups are essential partners in our mission to protect and enhance the Burnett Mary region's natural resources. We work together to develop and implement sustainable practices, share knowledge and resources, and engage in advocacy for environmental conservation. By joining forces, we amplify our impact and drive meaningful change for the long-term benefit of our region and its inhabitants.
Traditional Owner groups
We recognise the invaluable knowledge and cultural significance of the land for Traditional Owner groups in the Burnett Mary region. Collaborating with these groups, we seek to integrate Indigenous perspectives, practices, and wisdom into our projects. This partnership helps us to better understand and respect the deep connections between people and the land, ensuring our work aligns with cultural values and contributes to reconciliation.
